《Still Waters Run Deep》Music Farmer Ensemble 20th Anniversary Concert

"It is music or not? It exists in a snap of the finger, in a downbeat and upbeat, in classic and impromptu, in tradition and modern, in history and life, in music and in sound.”

After some positive news from amid the unsettling and concerning Coronavirus outbreak reports, “ Music Farmer Ensemble 20th Anniversary Concert” successfully ended the first solo concert. I think we are exceedingly lucky to get personal with your favourite artists in our exclusive interviews- ALLO WILL and TAPAS HUMI.

The world of Chinese Traditional Music is full of intrigue, as we've discovered. Just like the smell and experiencing a signature scent - do you have the experience that your musical tastes are shaped by memories?

1. Tell us about the concept of《Still Waters Run Deep》— what are the values that underpin this performance?

A: This is my second time working with Music Farmer. I had experienced a truly deeper scope of cooperation. We decided to make our audience “watch” the sound of music and “listen” to the image.

The main concept is the art form of instrumental sounds by following the Chinese Traditional Music. Artists are conditioned by their audience and, at the same time, the concert produces mutual enhancement. By spicing up environment recording and electronic music interfere, has a tremendous impact on performances. Therefore, no focus on whether it is classical music or contemporary concert music.

Maybe traditional elements are not “old”. By contact, contemporary elements shall not be considered as "new". We create a way of ensuring the maximum possible vitality, values and culture to benefit future generations.

T: I believe most people are familiar with Chinese Traditional Music, some are feeling distance, including myself. However, the value of music is a way of ensuring the culture benefit future generations, no matter it’s traditional or contemporary.

There will be only pure auditory feasts for traditional concerts. However, this unique form of Chinese Traditional Music performance, which combines electronic music and live visual VJ, provides a very novel experience for the audience.

We didn't let the music and visual design go completely free this time. We controlled the rhythm of the entire performance conservatively.

A song sequence includes a first segment led by electronic music, which ventures into the artistic conception of the song, followed by chapters of the story in visual art, and then a slower transition into a traditional concert format. There's a different ratio of visual art and electronic music in each song. However, a few songs are kept, which are performed with the utmost simplicity in sound and lighting.

2. What is the difference, if any, between editing on traditional elements compared to contemporary elements?

A: The concert program is edited by the passionate musicians of Music Farmer. We’ve got to give them the whole nine yards by making music and visuals that are really tight, and then inspire that audience can feel it.

He continued: “Fastoso”(Luogu) has ultimately sparked with electronic music, the songs have funk basslines and stuff with ”Glitch Hop”. Moreover, the Master Musician of all time including - haoqin master George Kao, Ken Ohtake, Wakaさん, and The music editor “Faith”.

We were definitely in this place where we wanted to spice up with improvising music. We were learning about Chinese Traditional Music and Jazz are so similar that perform the space in it. This is a good experiment for that.

3. How do you come up with a new concept of a musical fusion of traditional Eastern and Western styles? Spontaneously burst into the concept or everything is planned?

A: I think there were a few silver linings. My job has become way more about bridging the gap and I had learned to share arts in a design/compelling way. The project consisted of many different fields focuses on artists including experimental techno music, traditional pop, and visual art. Throughout the project, the team integrates into different fields such as aesthetics, music, theatre, and hardware technology.

All our professional musicians are very different and true to ourselves, that is how we are conducive to great performances.

I admit nothing beats interacting with talented artists. For me, I prefer to enjoy an interactive/innovative experience with musicians.

T: I had worked with compelling artists that reach people through their music, which is paramount. Beyond that, the Director had trusted the process and ensured that it gets done. All our roster musicians have a vision, creativity, hunger, and a wish to share and engage. We are very different and true to ourselves, that is what we look for.
